Hundreds of university students flocked to the University of Warwick last weekend to enjoy the annual SHOTS tournament.
SHOTS is England Netball’s national university tournament exclusively for teams and players that are not involved in BUCS Netball competition.
The fantastic day saw multiple sides battle it out to become this year’s SHOTS champion alongside a range of off-court entertaining and entertaining activations.
On court, Northumbria University took home the trophy after countless superb displays in Coventry. The northern outfit triumphed while University of Birmingham won silver and Exeter University won bronze.
The medals were handed out by Vitality Netball Superleague and England U21 international Kira Rothwell, who also took part in a huge Q&A session with the SHOTS sides.
The British Army were also on hand to bring further off-court activities including a BATAK board to test the players’ speed and reactions in between games.
Red Bull provided the tunes as their onsite DJ proved popular as did their three-point shooting challenge, which saw individuals prove their long-range shooting skills throughout the day.
The event goes someway to recognising the numerous University Netball Officers (UNOs) who put in work throughout the academic year to help provide netball on campuses across the nation.
Jade Featherstone, University of Northumbria, said: “I thought SHOTS this year was amazing. The atmosphere on the day was incredible and our girls definitely had the best day.
“Obviously the day was incredibly successful for Northumbria so my girls winning the tournament has to be the highlight as they were all so excited and proud of themselves.
“I think the off court competitions such as the shooting competition and the photo booth always provides lots of entertainment and definitely adds some extra fun to the day!”
SHOTS participant Hannah Hicks said: “This has been my second year of attending the SHOTS competition. The first year I was picked to come with the UNOS and this year I was the UNO picking people to come along with us.
“It gives us a chance to play competitively without having to play against the BUCS first teams at other universities who obviously play at a slightly higher level than we do. The entire day is just so much fun with matches, competitions and photo booths to keep the memory of the day.
“It really brought our netball team closer as friends and I don’t think there could have been anything to improve it!”
