Jess Thirlby:

“New Zealand are going to be out gunning for us in terms of the result the other day, they too will want to get back on a plane with a medal round their necks. So, we’re going to have to be really smart, we’re going to have to have a better start than we did in our match against Australia.

“We need to get our heads and shoulders back, we’re a good team. Up until now we’ve performed really well and grown into the tournament so for now, it’s just a blip at a really bad time and tomorrow needs to be a better performance again.

“The team are a mature, robust group. You do have to allow some time and space to feel the disappointment and then we need to get back on track with what we did do well today in patches that will work against New Zealand. The good news is we had a brilliant game plan against them previously and we did a good job with it, but we certainly won’t be underestimating New Zealand this time around.

“It’s going to be a much tougher game, there’s more at stake this time. I have complete faith in the girls that they will come back and put a much better performance out and continue to make this home crowd really proud.”

New Zealand full squad:

Kayla Johnson, Phoenix Karaka, Kelly Jury, Sulu Fitzpatrick, Gina Crampton, Shannon Saunders, Whitney Souness, Kate Heffernan, Maia Wilson, Te Paea Selby-Rickit, Grace Nweke, Bailey Mes.
