Helen Housby and the Vitality Roses have been shortlisted for prizes at The Sunday Times Sportswomen of the Year awards.
Named amongst 33 nominees across seven award categories, the Vitality Roses are up for Team of the Year following their historic Netball World Cup campaign and Helen has been nominated for the main award – Sportswoman of the Year.
For the first time since 1995, England became the first team other than the top two nations, Australia and New Zealand, to reach a Netball World Cup final – the first World Cup final in the country’s history. On route to the final, they also beat the world number one and number two sides before losing to the Australian Diamonds in the final in Cape Town.
Part of the team’s success, Helen was named Player of the Tournament and Best Shooter after scoring 162 goals with 94% goal conversion. Before joining up with the team at the World Cup, Helen guided the New South Wales Swifts to the Suncorp Super Netball Grand Final – their third final in four years. In this same season, Helen was named MVP for the Swifts, scoring the most super shots (two-point goals) in the league and finished second in the league for Nissan Net Points.
The awards ceremony will be held on Thursday 2 November.
The Team of the Year is open to a public vote up until Wednesday 25 October.
