Key Course Objectives

Get your students involved in officiating netball through the Into Officiating Award. This course introduces the principals of umpiring and the rules of netball and can be delivered by a teacher. It is ideal for students who want to get involved in officiating and get involved at school or officiate at the School Games.

Into Officiating Award

The Into Officiating award has been designed for young people from 13 to 18 years of age and consists of a 6 hour workshop led by a teach or England Netball tutor. Once the students have had time to put their new skills into action they are assessed by undertaking a knowledge of the rules assessment. Then those that want to umpire outside the school environment take a practical assessment. Practical assessment are assessed by an England Netball Umpire Assessor in order to achieve the Into Officiating Award.


Key Course Objectives

• Introduce the principles of umpiring and the rules of netball
• Introduce officiating to young people, to enhance their knowledge and
understanding of the role that the official plays in netball and sport as a whole
• Offer opportunities for students to umpire matches within their own school or other
appropriate environments


Who Can Deliver the Into Officiating Award Course?

The Into Officiating Award course can be delivered by:
• An England Netball Tutor
• A teacher with QTS holding significant knowledge of netball and key stage 3 and 4
of the national curriculum Teachers must attend a three hour Orientation Workshop where they will receive the relevant information and resources to effectively deliver the fundamental skills of umpiring through the course. This includes Tutor Guidance Notes, a rule book and a candidate resource book to help support teachers deliver the workshop.


How Can I Attend an Orientation Workshop?

Orientation workshops are organised by the County Netball Development Officer.

The cost is £25 for affiliated schools and £35 for non-affiliated schools.


Running the Into Officiating Award in your School

Once you have attended an Orientation Workshop you can then deliver the course to your learners. Learners resources packs contain attendance certificates and learner resource and workbook, rule book, finger whistle and umpire score card can be purchased by calling the England Netball Shop on 08706 061686 and costs £14.95 each.


Getting Qualified

Once learners have attend the Into Officiating Award course, they will need to gain practical experience in a game setting and could be acquired through after school clubs or school matches. This needs to be supportive with appropriate feedback being offered to help develop confidence.
Once the teacher is satisfied their learners are ready, and have a sound knowledge of the rules, they are put in for the rules assessment. For the learners wanting to umpire outside the school environment then a practical assessment is organised. An England Netball Assessor will view a selection of umpires in a game situation, to determine whether the umpires are ready to be qualified. The Assessor will also offer practical advice on areas that can be improved to further assist the umpires’ development.
