Qualified teams confirmed for 2023 National Schools Finals

The 54 teams for this year’s National Schools Finals, in association with the British Army, have been confirmed.

46 schools are represented across the three age categories with the U16s and U19s in action on Saturday 11 March and the U14s set to compete on Sunday 12 March at Oundle School in Northamptonshire.

Around 1,500 schools take part in the National Schools Competition each year, starting with the County Rounds before Christmas.

Teams then progress to the Regional Schools Finals with the top two sides from each age category from each region qualifying for the finals weekend.

The National Schools Finals format firstly sees the U14s, U16s and U19s each split into two sections for a round-robin across 18 rounds of action.

The best four teams (top two in each section) from each age group will then compete in semi-finals followed by third-place play-offs and finals before the presentations.

For the first time this year, more competitive games are being added to the schedule with the introduction of a National Schools Cup in each age group.

The Cup will see for the teams who finish in third and fourth place in their respective sections go head-to-head in semi-finals before a third-place play-off and final.

Amongst the qualified teams, U14 reigning champions Putney High School (London & South East) are back to defend their crown along with Withington (North West) who finished third in the 2022 edition.

In the U16 competition, Cheadle Hulme (North West), who previously picked up the award for the best defensive average, will be out to lift the trophy once again.

Meanwhile in the U19 category, Millfield School (South West) will be hoping to go one better than their runners-up medal from 2022, especially in the absence of previous winners Blue Coat. Wrekin College (West Midlands), who came third last time out, also return with their eyes on the prize.

Hurstpierpoint are the only team to have a team qualify for all three age groups in this year’s final.
